Diasporia Blues

"So,

here you are

too foreign for home

too foreign for here.

never enough for both."

The phrase, or rather feeling, "diasporia blues" was coined in the poem above by Iljeoma Umbeinyuo. It is the feelings of being split in two and encompasses a lot of what it means to be second generation and stuck between two cultures- two worlds. However, what I hope this website has shown that although there are so many factors that go into being Asian American- it is such a universal feeling.

Being Asian- American comes with having a hard time to finding a group to identify with or belong to, but as I have grown older, I have come to realize that we are our own group. Growing up in similar second- generation circumstances, we are able to find so many commonalities that a lot of us to relate to. This is something I explored in my Media Analysis Phase when looking at the viral Facebook page "subtle asian traits." This exploration of the page not only provided me with a "third space" to convene and relate to these experiences, but also validated how real this community was and the amount of support was reassuring.

From here, I feel that it is important to embrace what it means to be Asian American in this day and age and that comes with recognizing the a lot of the social issues that come with being in this community, but also recognizing that there is so much to be celebrated.

"SO TO THE ASIAN AMERICAN AWAKENING , LET THIS BE THE MOMENT WHEN YOU REALIZE YOU'RE NOT WHITE NOR ARE YOU SOLELY ASIAN,

YOU'RE ASIAN AMERICAN"
